Place: Installation, Fall 2023. Using selected pieces of previous artwork including watercolors, woodcut prints, and drawings, I made a three dimensional collage filling the interior of hanging tree. The sides of the tree are thick pieces of cotton rag paper, gesso-ed and painted with oils to represent the mottled and aged surface of the tree’s bark. On one side is the tree hole that can be looked into, but not through. The other side is closed off with the image of window. To connect the two sides, I chose to use lots of thin pieces of string-like paper of various weights to create a natural feeling web or sinewy material. This work is displayed hung from the ceiling by many strands of invisible fishing line. The work can be viewed from all angles, looking into the white web, and peering into the layers of colors and images within the hole of the tree. Peer into the details in the center and experience an organic inspired form that both invites you in, and pushes you away.
